Prominent local sports executive Tony Mason,48, has been named the new CEO of the Indianapolis Urban League (IUL).
Mason was appointed by unanimous vote from a field of “numerous outstanding candidates,” said Linda Thomas, chair of the IUL board of directors.
“Tony Mason quickly rose to the very top as the appropriate choice to guide the organization and build upon the momentum of our past leadership,” said Thomas.
Mason’s experience includes stints as senior vice president of the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee; executive director at Circle City Classic; and youth programs coordinator at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Mason will become the third president and CEO in the 49-year history of the IUL, one of Indiana’s most respected and influential organizations.
“Tony Mason is an excellent choice to lead the Indianapolis Urban League,” said Carey Lykins, CEO, Citizens Energy Group and search committee chair. He cited Mason’s experience with Indiana Black Expo, Circle City Classic and the Super Bowl host committee.
“Tony Mason has the capacity and leadership qualities IUL needs right now,” said State Representative Greg Porter and IUL board member.
“I have had the privilege of working with Tony for many years. We are confident he will elevate the presence of the IUL along with the community, sponsors and donors.”
Mason succeeds Joseph Slash, who served as IUL president and CEO since 2003.
Mason earned his bachelor’s degree in public administration and M.S. from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
Mason will report to Thomas and the board of directors, leading staff and volunteers through the National Urban League’s 5-Point strategy that includes education and youth empowerment, economic empowerment, health and quality of life empowerment, civic engagement and civil rights and racial justice empowerment.
Mason is expected to assume his new leadership role Oct. 13.
