What makes it special: Sanders Temple COGIC is a church of people who love the Lord, serve their community and are serious about worship.
In its early days efforts were made by neighbors to have the church shut down due to the commotion of its services!
The congregation was established by Elder James L. Sanders in the home of an ill, elderly woman at 444 W 21st St., where prayer services were held.
The woman was healed, and the prayer services developed into a growing congregation that first moved to a small garage, and then shared space with another church until moving into a building at 3731 Boulevard Pl. in 1957, when the church adopted its name.
Sanders’ engaging preaching style and the family feel of the church led it to yet a bigger location in 1969 at 2602 Roosevelt Ave., before it arrived at its current facility in 1980.
After Sanders died in 2000 leadership of the church was assumed by Davis, a Vietnam War veteran and automotive professional who accepted his call to ministry under the preaching of Sanders during the early 1990s.
“God has done the unthinkable” for Greater Sanders COGIC as it thrives in the 21st century, and it now has several ministries to meet the needs of its congregation and the community, such as the Young People Willing Worker ministry, International Evangelism, the Sunshine Band, the Christian Women’s Council, Seniors of Excellence and many others.
