The Kimball High School National Alumni Association will host its 53rd annual reunion from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1.

The event takes place over Labor Day weekend at The Westin Hotel & Resorts in Indianapolis. The California chapter is organizing this year’s celebration.

Kimball High School operated in McDowell County, West Virginia, from 1914 to 1985. Founded for Black students during segregation, it became a junior high after the 1954 Supreme Court desegregation ruling. The school closed permanently in 1985.

National President Joe Fitts (Class of 1952) leads the volunteer-run association. Chapters conduct year-round community service projects nationwide.

“Our reunions honor Kimball’s legacy while investing in future generations,” Fitts said.

The alumni association was formed in 1971 with the goals of scholarship, service and fellowship. Its 14 U.S. chapters rotate hosting duties. Approximately 200 attendees, including former graduates, teachers and relatives, are expected.

The event begins on Aug. 29 with a welcome reception, providing an opportunity for attendees to connect and kick off the weekend. The main activities include a membership meeting followed by an awards banquet, where scholarships totaling between $10,000 and $15,000 will be distributed.

The event features a memorial service to honor those we have lost, along with a picnic for everyone to enjoy, capped off with an executive board meeting.

Scholarships support descendants of former students. A competitive selection process is managed by the National Programs Committee.

The association maintains a database of over 1,000 members.
