In recognition of Father’s Day, these local dads share some of the greatest lessons they have learned in their fatherhood journey.
What have you learned about fatherhood since becoming a dad?

Barato Britt
President/CEO Edna Martin Christian Center
āFatherhood requires patience and adaptability. It tests every bias, comfort zone, prejudice or passion, and requires us to grow as men as we support our children’s growth.
It makes you fiercely protective as our kids navigate a chaotic world.
When we embrace the challenge, we, as men, become better, and we learn a great deal about ourselves along the way.ā
James Webb
Executive Director, Indy Juneteenth Inc.
āBeing a father showed me how much my father truly loved me. Fatherhood also revealed that children are not just learners but can be our lifeās greatest teachers.ā

Immanuel Ivey
Executive Director, Edna Martin Christian Center
āI’ve learned that our children grow up so fast. So, be more intentional about spending time with them and understand who they are, what they like, and what issues or concerns they may have.ā

What do you enjoy most about being a father?

David McGuire
Host of The Recess Podcast, Recorder Columnist
āBecoming a father was the blessing I never knew I needed or even thought I wanted. What I enjoy most about being a father is the unconditional love I receive from my daughter.
She loves me for who I am. I don’t have to do anything extraordinary or be anyone else; just being her dad is enough. Love like that is priceless.ā

Kelin Mark Sr.
Educator, Recorder Education Columnist
āI enjoy passing on the stories, lessons, advice and wisdom of my father and grandfathers to my son. It is part of their legacy that continues to live on in our family and lessons that have lived through many generations.ā
