Indianapolis City-County Council President Vop Osili announced that he will not seek re-election as president when his term ends, concluding eight years in the role. He will continue serving as a councilor.
Osili said the decision followed ādeep reflectionā and will allow him to focus his energy where it is most needed. He thanked council colleagues, staff, legal and policy teams, and community partners for helping āturn ideas into action.ā
First elected president in 2017, Osili led the Council through the COVID-19 pandemic and other major challenges, gaining a reputation for collaborative leadership across city, state, neighborhood, and nonprofit sectors.

“Serving as Council President has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Osili said in a press release.
Under his tenure, the Council approved major investments in public safety, expanded violence interruption programs, and strengthened mental health response initiatives ā efforts Osili said contributed to declines in homicides and violent crime. He also advocated for protections for longtime homeowners facing rising property taxes, working with bipartisan lawmakers on Senate Bill 46 in 2023.
Osili thanked Indianapolis residents for their engagement, saying community voices shaped key decisions during his presidency.
āI will have more to share soon,ā he said. āFor now, my focus remains on the day-to-day work our neighbors count on us to do.ā
