Your mental health matters: Tips and resources for support

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder that our psychological well-being is as essential as physical health.

Admittedly, understanding how to navigate mental health care, especially during a crisis, can be overwhelming. Indiana residents are not alone in facing these challenges; help is available for everything from knowing when to call for help to navigating insurance coverage and creating mindful habits. With practical tools and a clearer understanding of available resources, individuals can take meaningful steps toward better mental health care management.

One of the most important things to know is who to contact for help during a crisis. A crisis can include sudden mood changes, withdrawal from social activities, changes in eating or sleep patterns, a decline in personal hygiene, increased substance use, paranoia or delusions, feelings of helplessness or despair, risky or destructive behavior, difficulty in concentrating or functioning and thoughts of death and suicide.

If you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health crisis, 988 is the best number to call. This national helpline connects callers with trained mental health counselors who can provide immediate emotional support. Unlike 911, the focus of 988 is on de-escalating mental health situations without automatically involving law enforcement or emergency medical services unless necessary. The counselors can also help connect individuals to local mental health services for immediate and ongoing care.

Key features of 988 include:

  • Access to crisis counseling
  • Less police involvement
  • Referral to local mental health support

Beyond crisis care, Mental Health Awareness Month is also a reminder to focus on proactive care for yourself and those you care about, including understanding and navigating your health insurance. Many Indiana residents don’t realize that mental health services such as therapy, counseling and psychiatric care are often covered under their existing insurance plans. I encourage everyone to review their insurance plans, ask questions about mental health coverage and take advantage of available resources.

Here are a few simple steps Hoosiers can take this month:

  • Review your insurance plan’s mental health benefits.
  • Contact your insurance provider if you are struggling to discuss the options for the best next steps. They can assist you in finding in-network counselors and psychiatrists.
  • Ask about copays, session limits and coverage for telehealth services.

You don’t need big changes to support your mental health. Small, daily habits can make a real difference over time. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but a few consistent steps can help build resilience and overall well-being.

Here are a few simple tips to help foster wellness:

  • Practice mindfulness by taking a few minutes each day to center yourself through reflection or meditation. This simple habit alleviates stress and sharpens your ability to concentrate.
  • Aim for at least 30 minutes of movement each day to boost your mood. The endorphins released during physical activity can work wonders for your mental health.
  • Nurture your relationships with friends and family. Having a reliable support system can make all the difference during challenging times.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a call to action. Whether it’s knowing when to call 988, how to get the most from your insurance or incorporating intentional habits, everyone deserves support that is effective, compassionate and tailored to their needs. This month, check in on yourself, reach out if you need support and remind the people around you that help is always available.
