Purdue: No plans to censure anti-gay prof

Purdue University in Indiana said it had no plans to discipline a professor who presented an “economic case” against homosexuality on a conservative blog.

“There are many things on the Internet that would be offensive to a lot of people but protected by the First Amendment,” Purdue spokeswoman Jeanne Norberg told the Indianapolis Star.

“The best response is to speak up, which is exactly what our students and some faculty are doing.”

Some students called for library science Professor Bert Chapman to resign or be fired for his Oct. 27 Townhall.com posting under the headline “An Economic Case Against Homosexuality.”

The posting, on the Web publication primarily dedicated to conservative U.S. politics, argued that the costs for AIDS research and treatment, among other things, should factor into the national debate over the acceptance of gays and lesbians.

“The most concrete way to protect the university’s reputation against academic dishonesty and mediocrity is for him to resign,” Purdue senior Kevin Casimer told the Star. Casimer organized a petition campaign against the professor.

Chapman, 47, defended his blog.

“As a conservative Christian, I firmly believe the homosexual lifestyle is morally wrong, and my blog posting sought to emphasize there are economic and public policy implications to widespread and open acceptance of this lifestyle,” he said.

He also said he was surprised at the backlash and wished the matter would go away.
