When you want to catch up with a friend, there are a few choices but one of the most popular includes dining out on the town. Not only does this drag you out of your normal work-life routine, you also get to discover a few new eateries in your city. Since I wanted to catch up with my friend Megan, I thought it would be perfect to do so over lunch. Being new to the city, I am still warming up to the exciting restaurant life, so when she suggested Bru Burger Bar on Massachusetts Ave., the place Iāve had my eye on since the summer, I figured āwhy not?ā
A little after 11:30 a.m. Bru Burger was bustling with hungry people grabbing a quick lunch with co-workers, friends and family members. Our wait time was estimated at 15 minutes but we were led to a comfy two top table within 10 minutes. The first thing I noticed was the menu size, not necessarily the menu items, but the physical size of the menu, it was huge!
Iām not a big burger person, but there was no way I could go to a burger restaurant and not order one. I would feel as if I was cheating the system. Twelve Chef Burgers were listed on the menu in addition to 11 classic burgers and sandwiches. One thing I found pretty interesting was that any burger or sandwich meat could be substituted as a turkey burger, veggie patty or chicken breast. This is a genius way of luring all types of customers and catering to everyoneās needs. The Chef Burgers included the classic Bru Burger with Taleggio cheese, bacon, tomato jam, caramelized onion, chopped lettuce and mayo; the Melt Your Face Burger topped with habanero hot sauce, habanero Havarti, habanero whole grain mustard and lettuce; and the Mexicali BBQ Burger pilled with white queso, pickled jalapenos, guacamole, fried onion, house BBQ sauce and lettuce among other burgers. Just that section of the menu alone screamed the word āspicy.ā
Bru Burger also has other burgers and sandwiches that are less fancy including the Patty Melt, Housemade Veggie Burger, Vegan Quinoa Burger and the Sun King Beer Battered Cod.
Fresh salads and appetizers like Soft Pretzels, Chicken Wings and BBQ Nachos are options for customers as well.
So what did I order? Megan told me a secret and I am going to share it with all of our Recorder readers. The menu offers a Burger Snack, which is qualified by the Bru Burger team as a āsnack-sizedā burger. The secret is, it isnāt a snack-sized sandwich at all, and itās actually the size of a traditional burger. Compared to the specialty oversized burgers it may seem small, but in reality its size is pretty normal. The cool part about that is itās only priced at $4 and if you add a side of fries, priced at $2, youāre looking at a bill of about $7 with tax!
Once my āsnack-sizedā burger with a āspecial sauceā and fries arrived, I found it was perfect for me. While eating I kept wondering, āWhat was this āsecret sauceā made of?ā because it was a combination of tangy and sweet. After devouring my meal and chatting with Megan, I had to ask. On the way out of the restaurant, which had cleared many of its busy crowd, I learned the āspecial sauceā was a housemade thousand island dressing.
Now that youāve learned not one, but two of Bru Burgerās secrets, I hope you stop in to check them out. The service was good, the food was great and the environment was even better.
