10 Things to do before you travel

More by this author

Traveling can be an exciting yet stressful time for vacationers. Staying organized and having a clear and concise game plan can mean the difference between fun in the sun and a travesty of a trip.

Here’s a list of 10 travel must-do’s before you hit the road.

Check your itinerary

Be sure to go online and check your flight itinerary for arrival and departure times. Sites like Expedia.com offer a mobile app that will alert you to changes in your flight times. The free app also offers users points that can be redeemed for discounted airfare and lodging.

Put away the pets

Find a kennel or pet hotel for your furry family members. Locally, Good Dog Hotel and Spa and Barkefellers offer extended stay lodging for dogs and cats.

Call your bank

If you’ve ever experienced having your debit card blocked while you’re hundreds or thousands of miles away, you know how frustrating it is to be without funds. Call your bank and alert them to your travel plans.

Watch the weather

It may come as a no-brainer to some, but checking the forecast for your destination is a great thing to do prior to hitting the road. Pack accordingly and take a few key items such as rain ponchos, and a heavy sweater or jacket for last-minute weather emergencies.

Plan your beginning and end

Spontaneity is the spice of life, but a proper plan will prevent a poor outcome. Map out what your first and last days will look like; transportation to and from the airport, travel time in the car, and hotel arrangements.

Manage your mail

Depending on the length of your trip, you may want to contact your local postal office to put a stop order on deliveries to your home as well as possibly redirecting your mail to a temporary address.

Research your destination

The Internet can be a great way to make sure your vacation is anything but ordinary. Look up things you’re interested in, unique cuisine options, and scour local blogs and websites for ideas that will take you off the beaten path.

Pack important items separately

Place your keys, cash, cards, identification, tickets, and anything else in an important place that’s easy to find.

Clean up at home

Unless you plan on having a house sitter tidy up before you return, take a moment to wash dishes, do laundry, and clean out the fridge before you leave. Coming home to a clean, organized space is a great way to rejuvenate and relax from your travels.

Have a great attitude

Keep a positive mindset and a spirit of expectation before going on your next adventure. A travel journal is a great way to keep track of all your fun memories. Don’t forget to take tons of pictures!
