The 2017 Indy Film Fest kicked off on Thursday, July 13, but you still have time to check out plenty of excellent films before the 10-day festival closes down shop on the 23rd. Movie buffs are invited to visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art this weekend to watch captivating stories from the Midwest’s best producers.
Indy Film Fest Board Vice President Jason Roemer says the event has been going strong for 14 years. After reviewing close to 500 films, the top contenders will be screened over the course of the event. After the films are screened, viewers will have a chance to connect with the people who produced them.
“These are independent films and movies that don’t have distribution yet, so it’s really an opportunity to see a different kind of movie than the ones you will find if you were just going down to Keystone or over to Glendale to see a movie,” said Roemer. “This year we have close to 40 visiting filmmakers from all over the world, as well as local filmmakers, so it’s an opportunity for the audience to ask questions to the filmmakers about the movie they just saw. It’s a neat conversation to see unfold.”
Here is a sneak peak of some of the films available to view this weekend:
“Chatterbox”
The Chatterbox has been an Indianapolis bar since the 1930s, but it hasn’t always been the establishment that it is today. The current owner, David Andrichik, has created a home where everyone is welcome and local jazz musicians can share their art every night of the week. Screening: Saturday, July 22, at the DeBoest Lecture Hall at 3:30 p.m.
“New Neighbors”
“New Neighbors” is the story of a mother who is determined to keep her two sons safe despite killings and assaults on Black lives. It is a clever, resourceful and unique approach to the Black Lives Matter dialogue. Screening: Saturday, July 22, at 5:15 p.m. in Deboest Lecture Hall as part of the “Shorts: Getting Past It” series.
“The Transfiguration”
When troubled teen Milo, who has a fascination with vampire lore, meets the equally alienated Sophie, the two form a bond that begins to blur Milo’s fantasy into reality. Screening: Friday, July 21, at “The Toby” at 10:15 p.m.
Winners will be announced on Sunday, July 23.
