IU Soul Revue’s spring concert

The IU Soul Revue of Indiana University’s African-American Arts Institute will present its annual spring concert on April 23 at 8 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood, Bloomington.

For this year’s show the IU Soul Revue’s theme is “basement party.” Friends and family can show up with a set of records, LPs and 45s and take turns setting the groove letting everybody know what the hip song used to be. Included will be dance-a-longs and sing-a-longs followed by the “Purple Hour” when lights are out and it’s time for the “children to go bed.”

The IU Soul Revue is one of three ensembles of Indiana University’s African-American Arts Institute housed in the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center. AAAI is the only collegiate arts program with an emphasis on African-American performance traditions through credit-bearing ensembles. Over the years, the AAAI has made a vital contribution to the cultural diversity of Indiana University by preserving, promoting, and celebrating African-American arts traditions.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children and IU students with valid ID (limit 2 per IU I.D.). Tickets are available at the Sunrise Box Office, 114 E. Kirkwood, or by calling (812) 323-3020.

Simon Fashion NowĀ returns to Keystone

This spring Simon Property Group Inc. will bring high-energy runway shows to shoppers across the nation with Simon Fashion Now. This free, dynamic celebration of style will make a stop at The Fashion Mall April 29 and 30. Spotlighting must-have trends for the spring from Fashion Mall retailers, Simon Fashion Now is bringing the drama and excitement of runway shows to stylish shoppers in Indianapolis.

Runway shows rivaling fashion industry shows in production values will also take place. Yet unlike the industry shows that preview styles unavailable for several months, Simon Fashion Now makes the hottest men and women’s fashions of the season accessible; every look from the runway can be immediately found at retailers within the mall.

Shoppers can expect to see an abundance of styles for men and women ranging from casual weekend wear and stylish outfits for the office, to show-stopping looks for a night on the town.

In addition to the runway shows, shoppers can visit Style Stops where advice and insight into the season’s trends will be offered in an interactive format.

Visit www.simon.com or The Fashion Mall Facebook fan page at http://www.facebook.com/FashionMallKeystone for the latest event updates.

Performances at Clowes Hall are April 29 and 30 at 8 p.m., and May 1 at 2 p.m.

El Ten Eleven coming to Bloomington

LA-based instrumental indie rock duo El Ten Eleven will be showcasing their musical acrobatics at The Bishop in Bloomington on April 27.

Described as “watching two superheroes do their thing” by San Francisco Weekly, El Ten Eleven are said to be mesmerizing in live performances. The show is a technical marvel as the duo recreate their pounding instrumental landscapes without the help of a single computer or sequencer.

Instead, Kristian Dunn wields a double-neck bass/guitar and a fretless bass and records and loops himself live while his feet dance on an extensive floorboard of pedals.

His partner, drummer Tim Fogarty, wreaks havoc on his drum kit and electronic drum pads while also occasionally looping himself.

For more information, call the Bishop at (812) 333-4700.
