Indiana lawyer recognized for adoption work

Natalie Chavis, an Indianapolis attorney, was honored for her work in wardship adoption. She was honored earlier this month in an Angel in Adoption ceremony and gala in Washington, D.C., according to the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI).

More than 140 Angels are honored each year. Among those recipients, Chavis was recognized for her commitment and dedication to the field of wardship adoption.

As an Indiana attorney, she prides herself in servicing foster families of children preparing to be freed for adoption or with whom their parentsā€™ rights have already been terminated.

Chavis has worked among Department of Child Services offices and courts statewide, providing positive child welfare practices to improve the lives of hundreds. She was nominated and pinned by U.S. Rep. AndrƩ Carson, D-Ind.

ā€œNatalie works with any of our families without prejudice and enjoys building relationships with the families who seek her services,ā€ said Matthew Ashcraft, a licensing, recruiting and training specialist of Indy Foster Care.

Chavis has a diverse corporate, government and legal background. She is a third generation attorney who has worked in affiliation with her father for 13 years at Chavis & Chavis, an Indianapolis law firm. She also runs an independent legal practice, Chavis Management LLC.

ā€œWorking with my father has been the best thing that has ever happened to me, because we think so much alike,ā€ Chavis said. ā€œOne day he handed me three or four wardship files and told me to grow the business. So I did. Now, it is about 90 percent of my practice and I absolutely love it.ā€

Chavis is a strong believer in spreading adoption awareness. She advocates through presentations held at agencies and churches and given to foster parents and children once a month. She also gives a personal presentation twice a year and likes to invite guest speakers that are not readily available. Each has a different focus.

Her next will be to discuss predators on the Internet and the importance of Social Security protection. Since abuse has no color or boundaries, she says it is her duty to speak to those in need and who want to take better care of their children.

ā€œI do this work because it is what makes me happy,ā€ said Chavis. ā€œSince I found a niche for something I love, I donā€™t need to do anything for an award. If I only did it for recognition, it wouldnā€™t feel as good. I feel humbled.ā€

Chavis attended Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School of Indianapolis. She graduated from Purdue University on a track and field scholarship, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from the Krannert School of Business in 1992. She earned her Masterā€™s in business administration from Indiana Universityā€™s Kelley School of Business in 1996, where she was also a Consortium Fellow. Chavis then earned her Juris Doctorate from Indiana Universityā€™s Mauer School of Law in 1998. She is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
