Owl Musicians make joyful noise for good cause

Naptown music lovers can give themselves a Christmas gift – and make the holiday a little brighter for others – by buying a ticket for Owl Music Group’s Dec. 8 “Gospel Jazz Experience.”

The recording company head, well-known jazz drummer Kenny Phelps, explained that the label is partnering with the Julian Center to help area families touched by the scourge of domestic violence.

Specifically, the effort will provide food for families to have a holiday meal, Phelps said.

He recalled a past occasion when he and his family volunteered at a different charitable event.

“What we noticed as we left to go home and sit down with our own family, was that as nice as it was, they were eating with strangers, from a foam box, in a gymnasium,” Phelps said.

Through the Julian Center, families will receive everything they need to eat at home and restore a feeling of normality during the holidays, he said.

The upcoming Gospel Jazz experience will feature holiday classics in gospel, jazz and blues, with an impressive roster of musicians including Naptown sax lady Sophie Faught; beloved jazz singer Cynthia Layne; singer Sarah Scharbrough; soul singer Tad Robinson, (just back from a European tour); blues keyboardist Kevin Anker; hometown gospel favorites Soul Purpose trio of A.C. McClendon, Angela McClendon and Glynis Yowell-Smith; gospel soloist Brian Reeves; singer Alaina Renae of the Toy Factory; Darnell Williams of New Purpose Ministries; worship singer Jordan Applegate; and smooth songstress Valerie Phelps.

The artists are also excited about performing at Latitude 360, 4016 E. 82nd St., which offers a greater range for musical production and staging, Phelps said.

“Every time we do this concert, we also do a concert in an inner city neighborhood,” said Phelps. Owl has not yet released the details, but during the companion concert, musicians will partner with social services to bring information and resources to the community to bring lasting change, Phelps explained.

Previously, Owl has collaborated with Q95’s “Heat Relief” bottled water campaign for Wheeler Mission, a personal project of Owl pianist Steve Allee; and also given an assist to Little Red Door’s cancer awareness efforts, with leadership by singer Cynthia Layne who is now free from breast cancer following treatment.

Those attending the Dec. 8 concert can also do a little holiday shopping for the music lovers on their list by shopping for some CDs, Phelps said.

“We have the Buselli-Wallarab Carol of the Bell featuring Cynthia Layne and Everett Green,” said Phelps. “We will also have a holiday package of different cds as well.”
