Biscuits Cafe: Breakfast out of the box

More by this author

There have been very few days that have gone by in my life where I didn’t have breakfast. I need breakfast. My whole day is off if I don’t have at least something to munch on in the morning.

Maybe my fondness for breakfast stems back to my childhood mornings. While grandma combed my hair into long braids, I would slowly eat my sausage and eggs while watching “The Bozo Show” wishing I could be there having fun with all the other kids.

Today, I’m still satisfied with a plate of eggs, bacon and toast but when I want something more hearty I always throw in some kind of potato (smothered is the best way to do ā€˜em).

Saturday mornings are usually reserved for special items like pancakes or my new favorite, French toast.

However, there are days when I tire of the typical breakfast and crave something different. When I stumbled across Biscuits in Broad Ripple I knew this was a restaurant that offered breakfast out of the box.

I had read about Biscuits in a local magazine and put the name in my mental Rolodex. It came in handy after I overslept for church one Sunday. I decided to make the day somewhat productive and go out to breakfast.

The cafĆ© was small, but packed, which for me, means the food must be something special. My breakfast buddy (pun intended) and I didn’t wait long for a table. We sat down and stared at items on the menu we had never seen before. Mexican food for breakfast? Yes!

After a long deliberation, my dining partner chose the chorizo scramble, two scrambled eggs with chorizo sausage and mixed cheeses served on top of Mexican potatoes. I chose the breakfast burrito made with two scrambled eggs, chorizo and Mexican potatoes wrapped in a tortilla with Mexican white cheese.

Man, that food was good! It had all the elements of breakfast with the kick and sass of Mexican flavors. The portions were crazy big – certain specialty items, like my burrito, are served with beans and rice. I am not a fan of beans at any time of the day so I asked for double rice.

The breakfast quesadilla (chorizo, eggs, Mexican potatoes, Mexican white cheese folded in a flour tortilla and grilled) and the huevos rancheros (two eggs cooked to order smothered in red or green salsa served with tortillas, Mexican potatoes and refried beans) are both noteworthy breakfast items.

If you’re not into Mexican before lunchtime, Biscuits offers traditional breakfast items such as pancakes, waffles and French toast; biscuits and gravy; country fired steak; and omelettes. They also offer fruit, oatmeal or grits, or cottage cheese for pennies more.

In addition to breakfast, Biscuits also offers lunch and dinner. They serve salads and burgers, but also (you guessed it) Mexican fare. Next time I visit Biscuits CafĆ©, I’m going to try the enchiladas verdes, a corn tortilla filled with chicken topped with tomatillo sauce and the Sopapillo, a traditional fried pastry.

The food at Biscuits is surprising but the prices are even more amazing. Our breakfast averaged about $6.50 per person and lunch and dinner items are no more than $10.95.

Break out of your boring breakfast routine and head to Biscuits. It’s great for your stomach and your wallet.
