KIB’s Youth Tree Team kicks off

More by this author

The Youth Tree Team at Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB) is officially underway. The program runs from June 17 to Aug. 1 with youths working 20 hours a week, Monday through Thursday.

This seven-week paid, summer program is what some would consider “the perfect summer job.” Youth receive a free lunch each day and earn $8 per hour for their work. Each year, the number of applicants grows with more students eager to get involved.

This year, KIB produced their largest team yet with 64 students and 16 college-aged leaders. The team is split into 8 crews consisting of 8 high school students and two adult leaders. Since 2006, the Youth Tree Team (YTT) has been partnering up with KIB’s NeighborWoods program to water, mulch, weed, and plant trees. The program also includes enrichment activities such as a wilderness camping trip, learning financial management skills, networking with green-collar professionals, and rafting on the White River.

The YTT program is another effective way KIB works to beautify the city of Indianapolis. In the drought of 2012, YTT members working with KIB’s NeighborWoods program watered nearly 10,000 trees each week; earning praise from the Indianapolis City County Council. Members not only learn the ins and outs of tree planting, but they also gain a better appreciation for community engagement.

Additionally this year, KIB’s Youth Tree Team is one of three US programs piloting a financial management savings program targeting youth. The America Saves program brings together a coalition of groups to help teach youth the importance of saving; highlighting access to direct deposit, the importance of budgeting, and teaches first time employees saving strategies.

Funding for Youth Tree Team is provided by The City of Indianapolis, Lilly Endowment, The Glick Fund, Summer Youth Program Fund, Youth Working for Indy, Old National Bank Foundation, and many other generous supporters.
