A 47-year-old Indianapolis man was jailed after police say he raped his 80-year-old girlfriend, leading to her death.
Monte Ayres was being held Friday in Marion County Jail on a preliminary charge of murder. He also was charged with rape, criminal deviate conduct, battery and resisting law enforcement.
Police say Ayres’ girlfriend, Kathleen Vargas, died Wednesday at St. Vincent Hospice. Police say Vargas’ spleen was ruptured in the July 18 attack at their Indianapolis home.
Police spokesman Sgt. Matt Mount says Ayres used an object in the assault that police believe caused the internal injuries.
Officers spotted Ayres at the home when they responded after the attack was reported and arrested him when he ran away.
