Satisfying soul food with love

More by this author

Indianapolis has a proud, historical heritage of soul food restaurants that serve awesome, unforgettable entrees.

Perhaps the newest edition to this elite group of dining establishments is Mama Woods Soul Food Restaurant, which opened on East 16th two months ago. In that short amount of time, the place has already earned a growing number of patrons who have made it their new top choice, whether they are in need of breakfast, lunch or dinner.

ā€œBusiness has been going great, and we have been blessed with people who return to us,ā€ said manager Tyrone Woods.

Mama Woods is a traditional soul food establishment that can hook guests up with exactly what they need to get their day started right with various breakfast items.

Top options include omelets, made from two eggs, meat and your choice of veggies and cheese; chicken and waffles and combos such as the big breakfast for $9.50 (with waffle or pancakes, grits, potatoes, bacon and sausage for $9.50) and the $5.50 mini breakfast, which comes with sausage or bacon, an egg, toast, potatoes and grits.

Also available is a nice selection of lunch and dinner entrees ranging from $10.50 to $11.75 such as pork chops, chicken wings, barbecue chicken, ribs or rib tips, salmon patties and fish like catfish, tilapia and whiting.

Each entrƩe comes with two homemade sides such as fried sweet corn, green beans, mashed potatoes, yams, fries, macaroni and cheese, cole slaw, fried green tomatoes and baked potatoes.

During my recent visit to Mama Woods, I was blessed with an opportunity to try the rib tips with green beans, macaroni and cheese and a strawberry lemonade. Not only are the portions generous, but every was absolutely satisfying.

Most of the items prepared at Mama Woods are made with recipes passed down by Woodsā€™ mother, Paula Woods, who passed away two years ago.

ā€œOur food is made from the soul with love and excellence,ā€ Tyrone Woods said.

His mother and his fiancĆ©ā€™ had always dreamed of having their own soul food restaurant, and this year they were able to turn that dream into a reality.

One of the details that a first-time visitor will notice immediately is the friendly and warm atmosphere. Guests are treated as if they have been invited to someoneā€™s house and are about to receive a home-cooked meal. Amidst neatness and comfort of the modern decor, people can be seen sitting at tables and enjoying good conversations as they enjoy the food that will keep them coming back.

Under the leadership of Woods and owner Sonequia Ferguson, Mama Woods is destined to grow quickly into one of the cityā€™s premiere soul food establishments; a place where customers will depart feeling positive and satisfied.

ā€œWhen people come here they can expect to be treated like family, which means with love,ā€ Woods said.
