‘Africentric’ red carpet premiere

The red carpet premiere of “An African-American Quest for Authenticity” will be May 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Georgetown Cinemas, 3898 Lafayette Rd.

The film is a documentary about 21 trailblazing “repatriates” who left America to return to the land of their ancestors and live an authentic and fulfilling life in Ghana, West Africa. This film reveals a theme that seems to connect them all – they have found peace and freedom living in the land of their ancestors and are living successfully.

This film also dispels many myths about Africa and captures the true spirit, challenges and joys of these repatriates as they live their authentic lives reconnecting to their Motherland.

The event is presented by the Emerging Filmmakers Cooperative, a consortium of independent visual media artists.

Cultural Cannibals will present Bollywood Bhangra on May 20, from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. at Club Hyde, 20 W. Louisiana St., in downtown Indianapolis.

Admission is $6 at the door.

Bollywood Bhangra has been called one of the hottest parties in Indianapolis.

The terms Bollywood and Bhangra refer to popular forms of dance music originating in India. Bhangra, a blend of hip-hop and dance hall with traditional folk music from the Indian region of Punjab, was brought to the attention of the American public by artists like Jay-Z and Timbaland.

Bollywood is the name given to the film industry of Mumbai, India. Nearly all the movies produced in Mumbai are musicals, so the term is also applied to the music of these films.
