PRESS RELEASE
INDIANAPOLIS – Barnes & Thornburg LLP, a leading national law firm with offices in Indianapolis, Elkhart, Fort Wayne and South Bend, is expanding into Ohio with the addition of noted labor and employment attorney William A. Nolan, who will lead the firm’s new Columbus office located at Fifth Third Center.
The Columbus, Ohio, office is Barnes & Thornburg’s ninth office nationwide. Last week the firm opened an office in Atlanta, Ga., its first location in the Southeast.
Nolan, formerly of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey LLP in Columbus, joins Barnes & Thornburg as a partner in the firm’s Labor and Employment Law Department which Law360 ranks as one of the top 20 labor and employment practices nationwide; Workforce Management also has recently named the firm to its list of top employment law firms in the country for the second consecutive year.
“We are pleased to welcome someone of Bill’s caliber to Barnes & Thornburg, and we are excited about the opportunity to better serve our clients with our new Ohio office,” Firm Managing Partner Alan A. Levin said. “In recent years, we have seen an increased need for labor and employment counseling on a number of issues from our clients who operate in Ohio, as well as those who are based in Ohio.”
Levin noted that Barnes & Thornburg is not expanding into Columbus just to get bigger, but rather to better serve its clients. “Unlike other firms, our strategic growth is not premised on just adding more lawyers to leverage dollars for the firm, but rather stems from our desire to add respected practitioners like Bill who immediately are able to bring the desired value to our client matters. This value includes rates that will be very competitive in the Columbus market.” Cost management and client service will remain key elements in the firm’s future growth, Levin observed.
“In this type of economic environment, labor and employment issues are a chief concern for both employees and employers, and these clients are searching for the best value,” added Nolan. “To that end, it’s exciting to join such a well-respected firm and acclaimed labor and employment platform. Barnes & Thornburg is committed to delivering to Ohio businesses the type of quality legal services today’s marketplace requires.”
For nearly 20 years, Nolan has litigated matters for clients in a broad range of areas, including covenant not to compete and trade secret cases; discrimination and discharge lawsuits; and wage and hour, workplace tort and contract litigation. He also has experience in counseling clients in workplace and organizational privacy, information management, and negotiating and drafting agreements that form employment and other organizational relationships.
Nolan also counsels employers on a number of labor and employment issues, including employee health and leave issues, workplace harassment complaints and investigations, wage and hour compliance, and lawful discipline and terminations. He conducts manager and workplace training to ensure legal compliance on the front lines.
Nolan is a former two-term councilman and mayor of Powell, Ohio, a past member and chair of the board of trustees of the United Way of Delaware County, and a board member for the Community Foundation of Delaware County.
He is a member and past chair of the Labor and Employment Law Committee of the Columbus Bar Association, and a charter member and member of the steering committee of the Ohio Management Lawyers Association. He is the author of the Ohio chapters of four BNA state-by-state treatises – Trade Secrets, Covenants Not to Compete, Employee Duty of Loyalty, and Tortious Interference With Contracts – and speaks and writes extensively. He is regularly listed in The Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA Leading Lawyers for Business and Ohio Super Lawyers.
Nolan is admitted to practice in the state of Ohio and before the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the 6th and 7th Circuits, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Ohio and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana.
