The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana (ACLU) announced three new members of the board of directors, a new board president and vice-president and the addition of a full-time staff advocacy director.
āWe are thrilled that so many hard-working and talented individuals have chosen to devote their time and expertise to the ACLU of Indiana,ā said Jane Henegar, executive director. āThe work of our board has been vital to achieving our goals in 2014, including our historic campaign for marriage equality in Indiana.ā
Terri Jett has been elected president, and Andrea Cohen as vice-president. Effective Jan. 1, Terri Jett of Indianapolis succeeded Alice Bennett of Muncie as president of the ACLU of Indiana Board of Directors. An associate professor of political science at Butler University, Jett has served on the board for five years and was elected its vice-president in 2014.
At Butler, she teaches courses on U.S. politics with an emphasis on including the experiences of African-Americans and other ethnic and racial minorities that have been critical to the progress and development of the United States. Her research focus is on the experiences of African-Americans in rural communities in the southern U.S., particularly the Black Belt of Alabama.
āIt is an honor to be chosen by my fellow board colleagues to serve in this capacity for the ACLU of Indiana,ā said Jett. āIt is personally inspiring to serve with this group of brilliant and dedicated individuals working to protect our constitutionally guaranteed liberties and to ensure all people in Indiana are equally protected under the law.ā
Jett added, āWe will continue to build on our recent success under the direction of our last board president Alice Bennett, our executive director Jane Henegar and our legal director Ken Falk. This is an important and historic time to be a member of this remarkable organization.ā
