Extinguish your hunger at Firehouse Subs

More by this author

You may be among thousands of Indianapolis residents suffering from boredom and severe fatigue with the sandwich and sub shops we have had for years.

If that’s the case, it might be good to know that Firehouse Subs has come to the rescue, with the recent opening of three locations in Indianapolis.

Based in Florida, Firehouse Subs is a restaurant chain established by brothers Chris and Robin Sorenson, both of whom are entrepreneurs and firefighters.

In fact, living up to the restaurant’s name, franchise locations are launched by actual firefighters who want to provide everybody the same thing they enjoy: sandwiches with plenty of tasty premium meat, cheese and toppings on fresh, toasted bread.

In September, Firehouse Subs opened its newest Indianapolis location, a franchise by first responder Chris Bretherick, at 5963 E. 82nd St., in Castleton.

Visitors will immediately notice Firehouse Subs’ signature motif, which includes donated memorabilia from the Indianapolis Fire Department.

In fact, every location has a special hand painted mural in the dining area. The Castleton restaurant’s mural shows responders with Indianapolis Fire Department Station No. 9 handling a fire at a major retail commercial structure.

Customer service is excellent, with staff members going out of their way to ensure that your food is enjoyable and your wait is reasonable.

New customers will appreciate the amazing variety of sandwiches available in eight or 12 inch length, such as the Hook and Ladder, which comes with smoked turkey and Virginia honey ham with Monterey Jack cheese, or the New York Steamer, which combines corned beef brisket and pastrami with awesome provolone cheese.

Other popular choices are the Smokehouse Beef and Cheddar Brisket, the Firehouse Hero, and Club on a Sub.

Perhaps my personal favorite is the Italian, a very satisfying offering that has plenty of salami, pepperoni, ham, provolone cheese and Italian dressing. It might be tough for you to ever go back to the other places after you try this.

Those who do not have an interest in sandwiches can find fulfillment in other menu items such as The Chief’s Salad, the Firehouse Chili, various soups, potato chips, brownies and cookies.

Firehouse Subs also has a Coca-Coca Freestyle Fountain, a unique feature that many customers have enjoyed using. This computerized fountain offers more than a 120 beverage brands and soda flavor combinations that are not easy to find, such as caffeine-free Diet Coke with lime, Strawberry Sprite, peach Fanta, cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper and Minute Maid light orange lemonade.

Firehouse Subs has a family friendly atmosphere where children can choose from kid-sized subs and receive fun gifts such as a complimentary fire hat.

Another good reason to support Firehouse Subs is the fact that its non-profit Public Safety Foundation donates proceeds (nearly $5 million to date) to life-saving equipment and educational opportunities for our first-responders.
