“Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin will be honored by the Detroit NAACP at its annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner.
The Detroit News reports Thursday the civil rights organization will give the Detroit native and celebrated singer special recognition at its May 3 fundraiser at Cobo Center.
Detroit NAACP president the Rev. Wendell Anthony says the U.S. auto industry also will be honored. The Rev. Al Sharpton and Detroit pastor the Rev. Edwin Rowe will be honored for contributions to the civil rights movement.
This year’s keynote speaker was not announced.
Former President Bill Clinton and former Illinois senator and current President Barack Obama have been past keynotes at the event which draws up to 10,000 people.
