(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. Join the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walks in Central Indiana this October, and help change the course of breast cancer. This year, residents have three opportunities to take a step in the right direction toward finding a cure for breast cancer and celebrating more birthdays:
Hendricks County: Oct. 6, Hendricks Regional Health YMCA – 301 Satori Parkway, Avon
Shelby County: Oct. 6, Ivy Tech – 2177 Intelliplex Dr., Shelbyville
Indianapolis: Oct. 20, White River State Park – Celebration Plaza, downtown Indianapolis
NOTE: Registration for these events opens at 7:30 a.m.
“Thousands of women and men across Central Indiana will unite in their fight for a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” said Jodi Pickens, American Cancer Society manager. “By walking in this event, our community is helping the American Cancer Society do the most for people with breast cancer today and working to find cures to end the disease tomorrow.”
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is an inspiring, noncompetitive, family friendly walk that honors breast cancer survivors, raises awareness about the disease, and helps to save lives. There isn’t a fee to participate, but most participants form teams and raise funds leading up to the walk. Making Strides participants seek donations rather than pledges from friends, family, and colleagues. There is no minimum amount to raise, but every dollar raised helps save lives and create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays.
The dollars raised at the event fund groundbreaking research to find, prevent, treat and cure breast cancer; ensure access to mammograms for women who need them; and provide free resources and support to the one in two newly diagnosed women who turn to the Society for help and support, including transportation and lodging during treatment.
Since 1993, 8 million walkers have raised more than $460 million through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. In 2011 alone, one million walkers across the country collected $60 million to save lives from breast cancer. You can make a difference. The American Cancer Society encourages everyone to participate in this inspiring event to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about the disease and help save lives.
The Society invests more in breast cancer research than in any other cancer type and has played a role in nearly every major breast cancer research breakthrough in recent history. For instance, Society-funded research has led to the discovery of lifesaving breast cancer treatments, including Tamoxifen and Herceptin.
In addition, the money raised through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer allows the American Cancer Society to ensure all women to have access to mammograms and treatments – regardless of income – and makes it possible to provide free programs and services that improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families. The Society is doing the most to help people with breast cancer today in every community and is working tirelessly to find cures to end the disease tomorrow, and is the only organization available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
