IPS sports roundup: Jan. 7-12

More by this author

It’s city tournament time in Indianapolis, but the weather hasn’t cooperated fully. Some girls games were postponed and cancelled Saturday when the 7-8 inches of snow blanketed the city. We’ll hope for better luck as the boys start their tournament this week.

Girls Basketball

Crispus Attucks (3-12)

            • Jan. 7 — Crispus Attucks 46, Shortridge 36 (city tournament)

            • Jan. 8 — Heritage Christian 61, Crispus Attucks 34 (city tournament)

            • Jan. 12 — at Roncalli, cancelled

This Week:

            • Jan. 16 — at Scecina, 7:30 p.m.

            • Jan. 19 — vs. Covenant Christian, 1:30 p.m.

Congratulations to Attucks for being the only IPS team to make it to the quarterfinal round of the city tournament last week. Of course, either Attucks or Shortridge had to make it that far since they played each other first.

Arsenal Tech (0-16)

            • Jan. 7 — Scecina 40, Arsenal Tech 20 (city tournament)

            • Jan. 12 — at Kokomo, postponed

This Week:

            • Jan. 15 — vs. McCutcheon, 7:30 p.m.

            • Jan. 18 — at Logansport, 7:30 p.m.

            • Jan. 19 — at Gary 21st Century, 4 p.m.

Tech is running out of chances to pick up that first win of the season. I think the best chance left is against Gary 21st Century (1-14), which hasn’t fared much better than Tech.

George Washington (2-11)

            • Jan. 7 — Covenant Christian 78, George Washington 20 (city tournament)

            • Jan. 11 — Shortridge 54, George Washington 23

            • Jan. 12 — at Sheridan, postponed

This Week:

            • Jan. 16 — at Indiana Math and Science, 6 p.m.

            • Jan. 17 — Central Christian Tournament

Washington got a tough draw in the city tournament with Covenant Christian, and Shortridge was also a tall order for the Continentals. The good news is Washington seems to have at least a couple good possibilities left for a third win and beyond.

Shortridge (10-7)

            • Jan. 7 — Crispus Attucks 46, Shortridge 36 (city tournament)

            • Jan. 10 — Shortridge 58, Central Christian 16

            • Jan. 11 — Shortridge 54, George Washington 23

            • Jan. 12 — vs. Liberty Christian, postponed

This Week:

            • Jan. 15 — at Decatur Central, 6 p.m.

            • Jan. 17 — vs. Lighthouse South, 7:30 p.m.

Shortridge losing to Attucks was one of the more surprising results of this season, but I still don’t think there’s much debate about Blue Devils still being the best girls team in IPS.

Boys Basketball

Crispus Attucks (10-3)

            • Did Not Play

This Week:

            • Jan. 17 — vs. (winner of Tindley at Chatard), 7:30 p.m. (city tournament quarterfinal)

It’s been a light couple weeks for Attucks, although the Tigers could play two more games this week if they beat Tindley or Chatard. The semifinal and championship games are Jan. 19 and 21 at Tech.

Arsenal Tech (3-8)

            • Jan. 8 — Fishers 59, Arsenal Tech 55

            • Jan. 11 — Marion 73, Arsenal Tech 52

This Week:

            • Jan. 15 — at Covenant Christian, 7:30 p.m. (city tournament)

Tech played two difficult opponents this week about as closely as you could’ve expected, and then maybe better, especially with the four-point loss to Fishers. I’m not saying that’s as good as a win, and I doubt anyone with Tech would say that, but this is at least a good sign as we clear the halfway point of the season.

George Washington (7-5)

            • Jan. 8 — George Washington 96, Purdue Poly 33

            • Jan. 11 — George Washington 63, Shortridge 60 (OT)

This Week:

            • Jan. 15 — at Heritage Christian, 7:30 p.m. (city tournament)

I’ve been saying all season to keep a close eye on what Washington does in Attucks’ shadow, and the Continentals have a huge test coming up against Heritage Christian (10-2) in the city tournament.

Shortridge (4-7)

            • Jan. 11 — George Washington 63, Shortridge 60 (OT)

This Week:

            • Jan. 15 — at Cardinal Ritter, 7:30 p.m. (city tournament)

Shortridge almost had a breakthrough against Washington but came up short in overtime. Cardinal Ritter is a formidable tournament opponent, so we’ll see if the Blue Devils are ready for that next step.
