McNabb, Vick may play together

More by this author

Donovan McNabb said he has no problem with Michael Vick taking some of his snaps and warned opponents that the two quarterbacks could be on the field together at times.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Vick last week to add a different dimension to the team’s offense, not to push McNabb for a starting job. It’s likely that Vick, a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback in six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, will be used in a variation of the Wildcat formation.

But even in that scenario, McNabb won’t necessarily be watching from the sideline.

“I’ll be a receiver. I might be a tight end,” he said with a smile Monday. “You never know where I’ll be.”

It’s uncertain whether the Eagles would risk putting McNabb at an unfamiliar position. Coach Andy Reid isn’t revealing any secrets.

McNabb said he first lobbied the Eagles to sign Vick a month ago. He said he approached Reid with the suggestion even before Vick was released from federal custody after serving 18 months of a 23-month sentence for his role in a dogfighting operation. The two have been friends since McNabb escorted Vick on a campus visit to Syracuse a decade ago.

VIKINGS: Unnamed Minnesota players told FoxSports.com that they think Brett Favre will join the team despite the quarterback stating he would not come out of retirement.

“I don’t know if it’s done, but I think he’ll be in by the third preseason game,” one player said.

Sources close to Favre told FoxSports.com he is still taking advice and hasn’t set any decision in stone.

RAMS: St. Louis is giving fans the ability to text message security concerns without missing a play.

The system will be available during all home games, starting with Friday’s preseason matchup against Atlanta. The system is used at other sports venues and allows fans to alert the stadium’s command post if help is needed inside the stadium.

In other Rams news, quarterback Marc Bulger fractured the pinkie finger on his throwing hand and could be out for two weeks.

BILLS: Terrell Owens was back on the practice field Monday after the receiver missed a week nursing a sprained toe.

JETS: Defensive end Shaun Ellis was suspended without pay for the team’s regular-season opener and fined $100,000 by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The 31-year-old was arrested in November and charged with possession of marijuana, speeding and driving without insurance after being pulled over by police in Hanover, N.J.

COLTS: Defensive end Raheem Brock is expected to miss the rest of the preseason after breaking his left hand Friday.

LABOR: NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said he expects owners to impose a lockout in two years and that he has begun advising players on how to prepare for it.

BUCCANEERS: Punter Josh Bidwell is out for the year with a right hip injury. The team placed Bidwell on injured reserve.

CHIEFS: Kansas City signed free agent receiver Ashley Lelie, a former first-round pick who has caught 217 passes for 3,749 yards and 15 touchdowns in seven seasons.

BRONCOS: Denver acquired defensive end Le Kevin Smith from New England, according to his agent.

OBITUARY: Burl Toler, the first African-American official in NFL history who went on to work one Super Bowl in a distinguished career, has died. He was 81.

The University of San Francisco said Toler died Sunday at a hospital in Castro Valley. Toler was a star player on the Dons famous “Undefeated, Untied, Uninvited” 1951 football team that was denied a bowl bid despite a 9-0 record because it refused to leave its two black players – Toler and Ollie Matson – behind.
