Brown resigns position on City-County Council

Councillor Vernon Brown submitted his resignation today, effective August 1, 2014, from his position as an elected official serving on the City-County Council of Indianapolis-Marion County.

Councillor Brown began his first term as City-County Councillor over 10 years ago, in January of 2004, and has served on every committee of the City-County Council except for one, also serving as chair for the Parks and Recreation Committee, and most recently the Public Works Committee. As a former Majority Leader, Councillor Brown also served on the Committee on Committees, overseeing appointments to committees.

As a full-time employee of the Indianapolis Fire Department, Councillor Brown is no longer permitted to seek another term on the Council due to the passage of House Bill 1005, 2012, enacting Indiana Code 3-5-9. Brown will continue to serve in the community and has been slated as a candidate on this year’s Democratic ballot for the position of Warren Township Trustee, building on the good works established by his predecessor and friend, Jeff Bennett.

ā€œIt has been an honor to serve on the Council for over 10 years, and it is with mixed emotions that I submit my resignation. I extend a special thanks to all the good people on the far east side in District 18, as it has been an honor to work for and with them, ā€œ said Brown. ā€œMy resignation will give the Democrat Party an opportunity to fill my vacancy with someone who can run for a full-term next year. This early resignation also allows me to devote my full attention to the November election and the goal of becoming the Trustee of Warren.ā€
