Count the blessings

More by this author

When people are tempted to get discouraged during tough times, a loved one or friend may advise them to “count your blessings.”

This old saying simply means, of course, that we can take inventory of what we have in our lives that bring us joy, happiness and peace. Taking such an approach can help us become appreciative of the positive things in life and help strengthen our faith.

While the community celebrates the Thanksgiving season, the Recorder spoke with local pastors about what they are thankful for this holiday season:

“This Thanksgiving season, I am thankful for my salvation purchased by my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. When he died on the cross, was buried and rose again, all my sins were forgiven! I am thankful to be in the family of God! I also appreciate the Lord blessing me with a wonderful wife and children. Thank you Lord for good health, strength, and a sound mind.” – Pastor Charles W. Simmons Sr., Berean Bible Church

“I am thankful to God everyday for family. So often they are overlooked, assumed and taken for granted in our lives. At times it seems like bad things have to happen in order for us to really appreciate them.Ā  Family is a gift from God. They have your back when no one else does. Every once in awhile they need to know they are appreciated. Lord thank you for my first ministry – my family.” – Dr. James A. Jackson, pastor, New Beginnings Fellowship Church

“I’m thankful for my family and being able to praise the name of God and preach his Gospel. That’s the most essential thing in my life. It is a blessing, as a pastor, to be able to help those who can’t help themselves.” – Elder Roy Holt, pastor, Bethany Temple Apostolic Church

“I’m most thankful for Christ, his love for us and what he did for us on Calvary. I appreciate the freedom of religious expression and worship that we have in our country. I’m also grateful for family, friends and health. As a pastor, I’m thankful to be able to see lives changed and people encouraged through my ministry. Words cannot express the deep joy I feel when lives are transformed.” – Dr. Theron Williams, pastor, Mt. Carmel Baptist Church
