IPS sports roundup: Dec. 10-15

More by this author

Heading into the holiday break, we’re starting to get a better feel for you should put your chips behind. If you’re looking for an up-and-comer on the girls’ side, George Washington just won its first game of the season. Otherwise, Shortridge won a close one against Anderson Prep last week to even its record at 5-5. On the boys’ end, there’s nothing to suggest Crispus Attucks isn’t the best team in the district, but I’m here to tell you George Washington still can’t be written off.

Girls Basketball

Crispus Attucks (0-8)

            • Dec. 8 — Ben Davis 73, Crispus Attucks 10

            • Dec. 12 — Warren Central 87, Crispus Attucks 29

            • Dec. 15 — Tipton 60, Crispus Attucks 28

This is the worst start to a season since the Tigers lost 16 straight to open the 2008-09 season. They finished that season 2-18.

This Week:

            • Dec. 18 — vs. Columbus North, 7:30 p.m.

            • Dec. 19 — vs. George Washington, 6 p.m.

Arsenal Tech (0-12)

            • Dec. 11 — Decatur Central 38, Arsenal Tech 8

            • Dec. 14 — Richmond 41, Arsenal Tech 21

            • Dec. 15 — Terre Haute South 90, Arsenal Tech 29

I’m looking back on John Harrell and can’t find a season since the turn of the century that Arsenal Tech started with 12 straight losses. The Titans actually lost 12 consecutive games last season, but it was after beating Broad Ripple in the first game.

This Week:

            • Dec. 18 — at Indiana Deaf, 6 p.m.

George Washington (1-6)

            • Dec. 10 — George Washington 34, Irvington Prep 27

            • Dec. 14 — Howe 39, George Washington 21

Congratulations to George Washington for picking up its first win of the season against Irvington Prep.

This Week:

            • Dec. 19 — at Crispus Attucks, 6 p.m.

            • Dec. 21 — vs. Purdue Poly, 6 p.m.

Shortridge (5-5)

            • Dec. 13 — Shortridge 40, Anderson Prep Academy 37

Shortridge has won four of its last three games, and I’m officially intrigued. I’m trying to get out to see all eight (boy and girls) basketball programs, and Shortridge is probably next. Junior Eryn Turner had 19 points in the Blue Devils’ win over Anderson Prep.

This Week:

            • Dec. 20 — at Indiana Deaf, 7:30 p.m.

Boys Basketball

Crispus Attucks (5-1)

            • Dec. 15 — Crispus Attucks 62, North Central 47

Junior Sincere McMahon led the Tigers with 23 points and four assists. Senior Herold Bennett had 15 points.

This Week:

            • Dec. 20 — vs. Bedford North Lawrence, 7:30 p.m.

            • Dec. 22 — vs. Trotwood-Madison City (Ohio), 4:45 p.m. (at Arsenal Tech)

Arsenal Tech (0-6)

            • Dec. 14 — Richmond 78, Arsenal Tech 57

            • Dec. 15 — Cathedral 82, Arsenal Tech 44

Arsenal Tech has some six-game losing streaks sprinkled here and there, but John Harrell doesn’t show the Titans starting 0-6, dating back to the 1993-94 season.

This Week:

            • Dec. 22 — vs. Ponitz (Ohio), TBA

George Washington (4-3)

            • Dec. 11 — Bishop Chatard 54, George Washington 46

That ends a three-game winning streak for the Continentals. In the loss to Bishop Chatard, seniors Alandus Connor and Antoine Allen each put up 12 points.

This Week:

            • Dec. 19 — at Howe, 7:30 p.m.

Shortridge (2-3)

            • Dec. 15 — University 65, Shortridge 45

Nothing to be ashamed of in losing to University, a 21-3 team last season.

This Week:

            • Dec. 18 — at Bishop Chatard, 7:30 p.m.
