Surrender ends downtown Indianapolis standoff

More by this author

A man was taken for a psychiatric evaluation after he surrendered to end a seven-hour standoff with a police SWAT team at his apartment in downtown Indianapolis.

Officers were called to the Lockefield Gardens complex near the IUPUI campus on a disturbance report about 4 a.m. Tuesday. Sgt. Paul Thompson said the 26-year-old man was alone in the apartment but was armed with a rifle.

Officers evacuated residents from nearby apartments while they tried to get him to surrender.

Police say the man is an Indiana National Guard member who has served two tours in Iraq and is studying nursing at IUPUI. He also is going through a divorce and was carjacked about three weeks ago.
