Hite resigns from Civil Rights Commission

Rick Hite, executive director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, will be resigning from his post, according to Indy Politics. Hite stepped into the role in 2016 after being appointed by then-Gov. Mike Pence.Ā

In an interview with the Recorder in March, Hite said that his time up until then had been one of transition.Ā

ā€œWe had a very good director who left a legacy. We wanted to make sure to take the best practices and ideas he had and move forward with those, while fusing some of the new ideas the staff had,ā€ Hite said of his predecessor Jamal Smith.

Hite said at the time that he set out to continue Smith’s focus on coalition building, seeking partnerships with organizations such as the Indianapolis Urban League and the Indianapolis Recorder.

There is no clear indication of why Hite is stepping down.Ā

Governor Holcomb’s office released this statement today, “Mr. Hite has accepted a position with the Indiana Department of Corrections. We’re grateful for his continued service to the State of Indiana.”Ā

The ICRC has not responded to requests for comment.
