Twenty Tap: Really good pub food

More by this author

I’ve passed by Twenty Tap countless times and each time I was curious about what they had to offer. My curiosity was especially piqued in the summer when I’d see what I assumed were trendy Broad Ripple types leisurely dining at outdoor tables.

I decided to discover once and for all what Twenty Tap was dishing out.

Being that the eatery and local pub is located on the corner of 54th and College Avenue amongst a cluster of other eateries, I thought the space would be small. But after meandering past the outdoor tables into the building, I found Twenty Tap had considerable space divided in two, one side filled with booths for dining, the other for a traditional bar.

What I liked best about Twenty Tap was that it’s not as pretentious as I thought it would be. Here were regular people eating regular food, drinking real beer and having real conversations. (In fact, my first thought of the man I sat next to at the bar was “Shouldn’t you be at some hole in the wall bar drinking cheap suds?” This is why your mom tells you to never judge a book by its cover!)

After perusing the menu, I discovered why “real” people chose to spend their money at Twenty Tap. It’s a beer lover’s dream. Despite what their name suggests, they have 38 craft beers on tap. Yes, you read that right—on tap. From local beer, such as Peoples Farmer’s Daughter from Lafayette, Ind. to Baird Beer Wabi-Sabi Japan Pale with Wasabi and Green Tea from (you guessed it) Japan, Twenty Tap has a beer for you.

Nursing my infant is important to me so I decided to pass on the beer and instead ordered an orange Fanta.

I ordered an appetizer to make my meal more well rounded. I decided on the Edamame with chili oil, cilantro and sea salt. The pickled beets and beer-battered cheese curds on the appetizer list further let me know this wasn’t your typical bar fare.

I was too hungry to settle for a salad, but the shrimp and grits and the smoked turkey cobb salad sounded perfect for a hot summer day.

I decided on the blackened whitefish sandwich with remoulade, tomato, bibb lettuce and onion. The pressed Cuban sandwich and the house smoked pulled brisket were runner up selections I plan to sample on my next visits.

The blackened whitefish sandwich was arguably the best “blackened” sandwich I’ve ever had. It was spicy but maintained its flavor, the fish was flaky and the remoulade was the perfect complement to the fish. I chose the house salad as my side which had the perfect amount of vinaigrette.

Twenty Tap also offers burgers such as the Tex with bacon, smoked provolone, barbecue sauce and sautéed onions; and the Wake Up with a fried egg, bacon, chipotle aioli, and cheddar on an English muffin.

I loved Twenty Tap so much, I can already tell this is going to be my go-to spot this summer.
