State fair brings unusual food options

More by this author

Editor’s note: Today’s column is not the typical Restaurant Spotlight featured each week in Around Town. Because food is such an important part of the Indiana State Fair, we are putting the spotlight on fair food.

We all know the Indiana State Fair (ISF) loves to give us food one would only dare to try while at the fair.

In past years, I’ve heard of odd foods; but this year’s treats definitely top anything else I’ve heard of.

The fair is presenting a deep fried bacon glazed donut offered through MCL Restaurant.

Andy Klotz, publicity and media relations director at the Indiana State Fair, says he believes this item will get the most attention.

Personally, I’m willing to try anything with bacon.

Other sweet treats the fair will have this year are Reese’s funnel cakes and a deep fried brownie through Carousel Concessions.

The fair has not begun yet so obviously I haven’t tasted anything, but just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

The other new thing this year is called the redneck burger, topped with cheese, bacon, fried bologna, baked beans and potato sticks.

With more than 140 vendors, the fair will also present its traditional favorites people enjoy year after year.

The well-known dairy bar will have their famous grilled cheese sandwiches and different flavored milk shakes.

Other favorites are the rib-eye steak sandwiches, pork burgers and the roasted sweet corn.

When you think about the Indiana State Fair food, the one thing you can’t forget is their fried foods.

They’re deep fried Oreos, deep fried Twinkies, deep fried Snickers bars, and much more will always be there for customers to indulge in.

To tie in to the popcorn theme, the fair plans to spotlight healthier food options this year.

Food items less than 350 calories will be showcased on a sign outside of each vendor’s booth.

With all the tasty food options, I would make it a priority to head to the State Fair this year to test them out.

All the food will be available beginning on Aug. 2- Aug. 18 when the State Fair runs.
