Blistex Holiday Shopping Survey Reveals Top Trends for the 2009 Shopping Season

OAK BROOK, Ill., Nov 10, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ – On your marks, get set, save! Black Friday – the official start of the holiday shopping season that occurs the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 27 – is almost here.

As this celebrated shopping day for deal-seekers draws closer, Blistex, maker of lip care products, interviewed more than 1,000 potential shoppers to understand their thoughts and feelings about the experience of Black Friday. In the release of the Blistex Holiday Shopping Survey(i), Blistex reveals what’s on their minds. To help shoppers overcome common shopping hurdles, Blistex also partnered with Bridget Brennan, shopping expert and author of Why She Buys: The New Strategy for Reaching the World’s Most Powerful Consumers, to offer solutions to make the 2009 shopping season easier and, perhaps more importantly, more enjoyable.

Top trends for the 2009 holiday shopping season include:

– Big box retailers are the hot spots for holiday shoppers. Nearly three

quarters of Americans (73 percent of those responding to the Blistex

Holiday Shopping Survey) will visit mass merchandisers such as Wal-Mart

and Target to get the most bang for their buck this holiday season.

– Shoppers aren’t going to let winter weather stop them. 66 percent of

survey respondents do not let the weather keep them from heading out to

do holiday shopping – rain, snow or shine.

Shopping expert Bridget Brennan knows the importance of being prepared, both physically and mentally, to tackle the upcoming holiday shopping season. Keep in mind the following tips before heading out the door on your shopping excursion.

– Americans aren’t looking forward to shopping. According to the Blistex

Holiday Shopping Survey, 65 percent of Americans who responded felt

neutral to negative about the shopping season ahead.

Bridget’s Tip: “There are many ways to make holiday shopping

less overwhelming,” says Brennan. One of the biggest mistakes

that people make is focusing on the gift rather than the person.

The key to successful holiday shopping is a list that includes

more than just names; jot down other helpful information on the

person, too – such as clothing sizes, interests and ages.

Shoppers who do not plan ahead can end up back at the store. In

fact, 30 percent of those surveyed currently return or exchange

items purchased as holiday gifts before Christmas Eve. Taking

some time to make a list before heading out will save valuable

time in the long run.

– An intense day of shopping results in aches and pains. 63 percent of

Americans surveyed for the Blistex Holiday Shopping Survey have felt

some sort of physical discomfort during an intense day of shopping. It’s

not surprising that the complaints topping shoppers’ lists include sore

feet (40 percent), back pain (33 percent) and headaches (30 percent).

The survey uncovered one discomfort that is commonly overlooked –

chapped lips – with nearly one quarter (23 percent) mentioning chapped

lips as a gripe.

Bridget’s Tip: “Packing correctly can ease Black Friday body

blues,” says Brennan. Pack a Black Friday survival kit to stash

in your car or purse that includes water, portable food like

granola bars, an effective lip balm like Blistex Lip Ointment to

combat the dry mall air and cold winds, and scented hand lotion

– soothing scents can help decrease stress.

– Americans don’t use their time in checkout lines to recharge their

batteries. Only six percent of those responding to the Blistex Holiday

Shopping Survey use their time in line to do quick personal pampering.

Bridget’s Tip: Brennan says the time spent in line is a great

opportunity to recharge your batteries by doing simple stretches

or soothing lips with a swipe of lip balm, or eating a sweet

treat.

Bridget also advises that little presents can go a long way. The Blistex Holiday Shopping Survey found 54 percent of Americans typically buy health and beauty products such as shower gel, soap or lip balm for stocking stuffers. Consider creating a themed stocking, such as a “spa escape” stocking, which could include relaxing bath beads, scented candles, lotions and Blistex Lip Massage lip balm, which has a soft ridged applicator tip to soothe away rough spots on lips, leaving them feeling smooth and refreshed.

For many shoppers, facing the elements on Black Friday is a worthwhile endeavor in order to find the items they want and stay within a budget. Being prepared for the outdoor and indoor elements can add comfort and stress relief, which are two keys to winning the race.
