Healthy eating made fun

Many people are aware of the fact that some diseases affect minorities at disproportionate rates, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain types of cancer.

The good news, however, is that all of these ailments can be prevented or delayed by taking simple steps that involve exercise and maintaining a healthy diet.

When Eddie Met Salad, which has recently expanded to five locations in the Indianapolis area, makes eating right and taking better care of yourself easy, fun and interesting.

When many people visualize the traditional salad, they think of something that might taste good (with the right dressing), but will leave you unfulfilled with a naughty craving for that cheeseburger a short time later.

Fortunately, When Eddie Met Salad has perfected the art of creating salads that are hearty, satisfying and come in enough varieties to satisfy anyone.

“We’re the perfect spot to stop for a quick, speedy, and healthy lunch or hearty dinner,” said Eddie Sans, the restaurant’s owner. “We specialize in a line up of specialty salads that offer customers interesting, nutritious options.”

Sans launched the concept for When Eddie Met Salad as a joke for his senior class project while taking courses in industrial management at Purdue University. However, his concept of a restaurant that serves as a “sensible” fast food joint and a buffet with salad toppings quickly picked up support in the real marketplace.

You can order anything from the very popular strawberry garden salad (lettuce, pecans, parmesan cheese, and glazed strawberries with strawberry vinaigrette dressing) to the California roll salad (crabmeat, cucumber, avocado, sesame seeds and wasabi ranch dressing.) Other well known items include the Cantonese chicken salad, the salmon salad and the Philly steak salad.

In terms of price, most choices range from a reasonable $5.99 for small orders, to $6.99 for regular sized orders.

Customers can also invent their own salad, and you would be amazed at how many ways a salad can be prepared. First, you can select the base of your creation (iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce, pasta or baby spinach leaves), then choose from a seemingly unlimited selection of nearly 100 meat, cheese, dressing, fruit and vegetable toppings.

When Eddie Met Salad also offers daily soups, a few sandwich options, a kid’s menu (with grilled cheese, chicken tenders and fruit salad) as well as catering services for special events.

The restaurant’s simple, contemporary decor and friendly atmosphere seems to complement its emphasis on nutrition and general wellness.

When Eddie Met Salad is the affordable, ideal place for individuals who are serious about their health, but want to have fun with their entrees and are tired of the typical fast food products.
