Ind. secretary of state making congressional run

More by this author

Republican Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita (Row-KEE’-tuh) is running for the House seat being vacated by longtime congressman Steve Buyer (BOO’-yer).

Buyer announced Friday that he will not seek re-election this fall and will leave Congress after 18 years because his wife is ill.

Rokita said Monday that he wants to work on economic and security issues that directly affect the 4th District, which stretches from the Lafayette area through the western and southern suburbs of Indianapolis to Bedford.

The 39-year-old was first elected secretary of state in 2002. He cannot run again because of term limits.

Purdue University biology professor David Sanders, who lost to Buyer in 2004 and 2006, is the only Democrat to announce a campaign for the House seat.
