Indy receives a grant to strengthen local food system

More by this author

A $45,000 grant will support local efforts to increase access to fresh healthy foods for all Indy residents.

The City’s Office of Sustainability will use the grant, along with matching funds from the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF), to support the Indy Food Council, an organization created early this year to improve Indy’s food system, eliminate food deserts and increase overall quality of life in Indy.

“Making sure locally sourced food is available to every Indy resident benefits our entire community,” said Melody Park, Director for the City’s Office of Sustainability. “It encourages economic development, improves health and well-being, and makes Indy a more desirable place to live. This grant gives us another way to support the efforts already underway to achieve these goals in Indy.”

The Indy Food Council provides grants and small loans through the Indy Food Fund for non-profit organizations and businesses to support food-related initiatives, such as community gardens, farmers’ markets, farm-to-institution projects, urban farms, and healthy corner store initiatives.

Indy is one of nine communities to receive a grant from the Local Sustainability Matching Fund – a project of the Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities.
