Pizza off the beaten path

More by this author

There are lots of things in this world that I love. Two of them are good pizza and a good adventure.

The most recent girlfriend adventure found three friends hungry after going to the movies. We’re all fans of a good pizza, but we decided to visit one that was off the beaten path – Pearl Street Pizzeria & Pub, 65 E. Pearl St.

For those who frequent downtown, especially near Conseco Fieldhouse, I’m sure you’ve passed by Pearl Street a million times and never knew it was there.

As I searched for a parking spot, I said to myself “Wow, they built a pizza restaurant here? This is so different and metropolitan.”

Walking up Pennsylvania Street turning onto Pearl Street, it seemed as if I was immediately transported to New York City heading down a road less traveled, venturing to find the best the city had to offer.

I walk into the establishment and realized that not only is the location impressive, but the décor and atmosphere was unlike anything I’ve experienced here in Indianapolis.

We took a seat a few steps away from the bar and were immediately welcomed by a friendly waiter. While I continued to survey the comfortable yet urban room, my friends reminded me that we were there for pizza, not decorating tips.

Also a sandwich lover, I perused their substantial sandwich list considering a roast beef sandwich. The calzones looked good too.

Sticking to my mantra to adhere to a restaurants’ specialty, I decided to look at the pizza menu.

Pearl Street Pizzeria & Pub offers “build your own” pizzas that come in hand tossed or deep dish and have plenty of meats, veggies and gourmet toppings. They also have gourmet pies in options such as chicken Alfredo, Hawaiian, Mexican, and the classic Margherita.

They also have a dessert pizza and have salads, breadsticks, nachos and weekly lunch and drink specials.

There’s plenty of tap and bottled beer to wash down all that pizza. Plus this restaurant has a healthy wine selection. There is no children’s menu.

Pearl Street offers a pricier pizza, with pies ranging from $6.75 to $15.25 and a la carte toppings ranging from $1.50 to $3 each, but the food is so good, it’s worth every penny.

Whether you’re downtown for a Colts game or wanting a cool place to take a date, check out Pearl Street Pizzeria & Pub.
