The Indianapolis Black Documentary Film Festival (IBDFF), which showcases films documenting the Black experience, celebrates its 6th season next month.

Returning to the Indianapolis Art Center and Kan-Kan Cinema and Brasserie Aug. 15-17, the IBDFF welcomes Hoosiers to experience a powerful lineup of Black stories from across the U.S. and abroad — including stories from Nigeria, according to a press release.

ā€œFrom historical figures to social justice movements and personal journeys to artistic expression, these documentaries offer a window into the rich tapestry of Black life,ā€ the website states.

“The Light of Truth: Richard Hunt’s Monument to Ida B. Wells,” directed by Rana Sagal and produced by Vincent Singleton, is this year’s opening night feature film. Singleton, the director of the Loyola University Film Department in Chicago and an award-winning director and producer, is also the recipient of the 2025 IBDFF Spotlight award.

Singleton and Sagal’s film ā€œinterweaves the life and artistic process of sculptor Richard Hunt with the legacy of civil rights icon, suffragist and anti-lynching activist Ida B. Wells,ā€ according to a press release.

The documentary details the creation of the Light of Truth monument in Chicago’s Bronzeville community, which was built on the former site of the Ida B. Wells Homes, and explores how Hunt and Wells used their work to confront the injustices of racism.

Tickets to the 6th annual IBDFF start at $30 for opening night, $25 for a Day Pass and $10 for Individual Film Blocks. To purchase tickets or view a full list of films and descriptions, visit ibdff.com.
