BEDFORD, Ind. (AP) _ Some 130 members of an Indiana National Guard unit will soon be on their way to Iraq through at least the end of this year.
The departure ceremony Sunday in Bedford for the 2219th Brigade Support Company came on the weekend eight years after the U.S.-led war in Iraq began.
The Guard unit provides logistics and maintenance functions. Col. Ivan Denton says the unit is scheduled to serve in Iraq through December, but could then remain in Kuwait into next February.
Among those saying goodbye to their families was Spc. James Higgins of Hartford City. He hugged his 3-year-old and 5-year-old daughters while his wife, Shasta, held their youngest child. Higgins told The Times-Mail he would rely on computer cameras to help watch his children grow while he’s gone.
