Taste the island flavor

More by this author

Although Indianapolis has been spared from a very severe snowstorm this winter, I’m sure most of us are more than ready to see milder temperatures, perhaps the kind you will find in a country like Jamaica.

For a majority of us working-class Americans, a trip to Jamaica cannot happen right away and might take some budgeting and planning. However, at least we can enjoy a taste of the Caribbean in Indianapolis by visiting Jamaican Style Jerk.

Located near the intersection of 34th and Keystone, you might notice that the restaurant is situated on the side of a liquor store and check cashing place, but please do not let stereotypes take over and deter you. You will be safe on this well-traveled corner.

Besides, owner Kahni Harris and his staff are friendly, professional and patiently answer any questions a first-time guest might have.

Orders are made at a booth and the restaurant is designed for pickup instead of dining, so you might want to call ahead after your first visit.

Jamaican Style Jerk is known as the place to get authentic and savory Jamaican selections such as jerk beef, chicken or pork (served over a bed of rice and beans, as hot and spicy as you can handle), as well as favorites like curry goat and ox tail.

I have had several people tell me how good all those items are, as well as the smoked ribs and fried plantains.

However, as I drove to the place during my excursion, I was puzzled as to what I could order since, as of this writing, the Lent season was still in full effect.

I soon realized that Jamaican Style Jerk had me covered. They carry what is known as Jamaican veggie patties, which actually look somewhat like Hot Pockets and are filled with a variety of fresh, rich vegetables and seasoning encased in a tasty golden crust.

As someone who writes for a living, I am having difficulty finding the words to describe them… give me a minute. OK, let me just say that they are amazing, and have to be tried to be believed.

In addition, I also had to try the Ting grapefruit soda, and I tell you the truth: Ting has a nice zing and is great for washing down any meal. Other drink options include pineapple soda, fruit punch, ginger beer and cola champagne.

When it comes to its full entrees, Jamaican Style Jerk is generous, and the prices are decent. Daily lunch specials and weekly promotions are frequently presented, such as curry chicken with rice for $6 on Fridays and Saturdays, or a whole jerk chicken for $10, which can be made into a family meal for four with rice and peas for $15.

Anyone who knows my culinary tastes knows I love flavorful food, and that is definitely what Jamaican Style Jerk offers. Without a doubt, I will be coming back to enjoy some of their other items. If you want a real taste of the islands, this a place you must put on your “to visit” list.
