Get ready for prom!

More by this author

Prom. It’s the day many girls dream about from childhood and a tradition that some say dates back to the 1800s. The formal black tie event for high school students culminates a school year and, believe it or not, is an event that teens participate in around the globe.

For many, prom, which is short for promenade, is one of the most important experiences in a high schooler’s life.

“For most girls, prom is their first big day. That’s why they put so much effort into it. It’s not like a wedding, but to a high school student, it’s pretty big. They can be glamorous,” said DaNisha Greene, wardrobe stylist and fashion consultant. “Some may have never worn makeup or gotten their hair done up. This is their chance to be a princess and now it’s time to go to the ball.”

The first and probably most important part of prom is the date. Once that issue is solved, next is the attire. Some girls spend months trying to find the right gown and sometime spend too much or too little time choosing the right dress. Some spend ridiculous amounts of money for unflattering attire.

Here are some tips from Greene and other stylists on what teen boys and girls should consider when finding the right clothing for this special soiree.

Initial planning

  • Start early! The earlier you plan, the more likely it is you’ll accomplish your goals. Remember, your school isn’t the only one having a prom. Also some items may have to be ordered. When you wait till the last minute, some items may be picked over and may not be what you truly want.
  • Come up with ideas for how you’d like the night to be.
  • Prepare a budget. Make sure it not only includes attire, but tickets, transportation and events following the dance. For people with small budgets, consider consignment shops or borrowing a dress. There are also fun dresses for under $100 if you must go new.
  • Salons book up fast during prom season, so make sure you get appointments scheduled early. Be sure to confirm all appointments one week prior to prom.
  • Reserve the corsage and boutonniere at a local flower shop.
  • Girls, make sure you consult your date on his ideas. After all, prom is special for the guys too.

The dress

  • It’s OK to “be different” but make sure it’s tasteful.
  • If you are having your dress made, make sure the seamstress is reputable.
  • Greene doesn’t suggest purchasing a dress online.
  • Choose a style of dress that is tasteful and flattering to your body type. Make sure the dress color complements your skin tone and sense of style.
  • Bring a parent or stylist with you to look at dresses. Be open to their opinions.
  • Less does not mean more. Keep in mind, prom is supposed to be a classy, glamorous event. It’s also not the club. It’s OK to show a little skin and be sexy, but leave some things to the imagination.
  • Your undergarments are just as important as your dress. Make sure you get the right bra, panties, body slimmer to make your body look its best in your dress. Spanx isn’t just for larger girls. Slimmer girls should consider wearing a body slimmer to make sure their dress flows smoothly against their body especially if their gown is form fitting.
  • Get your gown altered. If you are short, you know what a hassle it can be to trip, so get it altered for the perfect fit.
  • When choosing a shoe, pick an evening or after 5 shoe. Steer clear of platform heels.

Hair and makeup

  • Look for hair and makeup ideas in magazines. Decide if you want to have a fresh face, a smoky eye, or bright lipstick.
  • Don’t wear or do anything that makes you uncomfortable. The best accessory you can have is confidence.
  • At least a month before prom, have a consulting session and practice run with a makeup and hair stylist to make sure the look is doable and looks right with your dress.
  • If you’re D.I.Y’ing it, use online tutorials (and lots of practice) to get your look just right.
  • Don’t do anything drastic to your hair or skin right before prom. If you want a new haircut, hair color, facial treatment etc. do it months in advance to give your body time to adjust and time to fix any mistakes.
  • Don’t forget to make appointments for eyebrow maintenance and nails.
  • Choose accessories, such as earrings, necklaces and bracelets that compliment the dress. Remember the dress should be the star of the show.

For the guys

  • If you don’t like your date’s dress idea or color, speak up.
  • Go to a reputable store to rent your tux. Many do custom tailoring and have matching shoes.
  • If your date is wearing a blue dress, for example, do not wear a blue suit. Choose either a black and white tux or suit with blue accents.
  • Be a gentleman and have a good time!
