Want a place where you can get food that is as comforting as the dishes prepared by your grandmother? You can find it at Mississippi Belle.
The restaurant, located at 2170 E. 54th St., is decorated inside much like your grandma’s house. There is African-American and religious art on the walls. The walls are draped creatively with flowers and a couple of plants hang from the ceiling.
At Mississippi Belle you seat yourself at one of the wooden tables and a server will be over to take your order. The deck outside is also a nice place to eat when the weather is appropriate.
There are numerous meat choices such as fried chicken, ribs and meatloaf. For your side dishes you have several options such as fried corn, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese and greens. All meals are served with hot water cornbread.
The restaurant offers the same selections for lunch and dinner, except the lunch prices are cheaper. Dinner prices range from $9.50 to $13.50.
Although dinner is served family style, Mississippi Belle is the only restaurant I’ve been to where individuals choose their meat and everyone in the dinner party agrees on four side dishes.
The restaurant has a different dinner special Wednesday through Sunday. Some include smothered chicken on Wednesday and turkey and dressing on Sunday. The homemade sweet tea will also remind you of grandma’s house, as will desserts such as chess pie and the Sunday special dessert, peach cobbler.
Mississippi Belle also offers their food to go and you can phone your order in ahead of time. Don’t forget to bring your cash because the restaurant does not accept any credit cards or checks.
