A tast of rustic Montana

More by this author

In an effort to try a different culinary experience than what I am accustomed to, I recently checked out MacKenzie River Pizza Pub and Grille on the city’s northside.

What I immediately noticed was the rustic atmosphere, and the nice view from one of the window seats near the patio, which is great for those who like “outdoorsy” settings.

MacKenzie River’s rugged décor and wilderness style environment can be attributed to its corporate ownership, Glacier Restaurant Group, which is based in Montana and has a network of restaurants in that state, Idaho, Indiana, North Dakota and Washington.

MacKenzie River prides itself on providing “a distinctive dining experience in an atmosphere unique to Montana” by offering delicious food that is creatively prepared and served by an energetic staff.

Some people had wondered what would replace the old Adobo Grill on 82nd St. when it closed, and fortunately MacKenzie River moved in.

Most guests will be satisfied by the nice variety on the restaurant’s menu, which includes interesting appetizers such as pulled pork nachos, fish tacos and Lodge Poles (cheesy breadsticks), and main selections like burgers and sandwiches, pasta, salads and soups.

Some of the more popular selections seem to be the Willow Creek turkey sandwich, the Grizzly Burger, buffalo chicken macaroni and cheese, Rustler Reuben, Italian sausage alfredo, the Santa Fe chicken sandwich and the Greek and Thai salads.

However, the star of the restaurant is arguably its signature pizzas, such as the Hot Hawaiian, Bell Ranch, barbecue, Caribbean Chicken and Greek style Athenian varieties. Patrons can also order more traditional selections such as the Capo pizza, which has pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms.

MacKenzie River is generous with its flavorful toppings, the natural grain crust tastes very fresh and the sauce is nice and savory, not too sweet or watery.

Plenty of local beer options are available through the restaurant’s pub.

Another strength of MacKenzie River is the quality service provided by its team members, who are managed in an environment that seems to inspire, motivate and challenge them to do their best for the customers.

I noticed a family who was seated at a table near mine who appeared to have a waiter that could not stop by often because he was busy taking care of several tables at once. Two of the other waiters noticed the situation and checked on the family to make sure their needs were met. How often is that kind of dedication seen in restaurants today?
