The unemployment rate in Indiana is 5.8 percent, yet many jobs are available. Some remain unemployed because they lack vital employment skills.
The Indianapolis Public Library (IPL) in partnership with WorkOne and EmployIndy, who specializes in job placement, are now offering job hunters help by providing one-on-one assistance to enhance employment skills. The library hosts a free job center open to the public.
Center programs focus on job search strategies, interviewing skills, resume development, and basic computer skills.
“The job center has been very successful in helping the library achieve our mission being able to provide services for people in computer access and job skills training for free to those who do not have the opportunity to get training anywhere else,” said Jon Barnes, IPL communications specialist.
There is no registration required, and a variety of workshops are available at various library branches throughout Indianapolis, year round.
With the help of Workone Indy and Employ Indy, the library trained experts to help residents who lack work skills.
Barnes believes the partnership creates a resource to the public in increasing connections in the community by providing services beyond the books.
“We generally have people who come in complete an application for services to assist in finding employment. We have a full calendar of events including resume writing, interviewing practice, and how to dress for success. Also, we offer opportunities to earn free certification in health and information technology fields for those who qualify,” said Tammy Thomas, program manager for the WorkOne Indianapolis North Shadeland location.
WorkOne Indianapolis offers more than 20 workshops to help people sharpen skills and become more marketable as a jobseeker. The IPL system includes the Central Library, 22 branches, and the Library Services Center making it convenient to finding a location nearby.
“We are absolutely thrilled to provide such an important service to those in need. The popularity of the job center has continued to withstand. Last year, we were at 6,139 individuals served,” said Barnes. For additional information, visit the website at imcpl.org.
