Urban League celebrates accomplishments, continues service

More by this author

Those who are unemployed or underemployed are encouraged to attend the Indianapolis Urban League job and career fair 1:30-4:30 p.m. June 20 at the Marriott Indianapolis, 350 W. Maryland St.

Ā The job and career fair is part of the Indianapolis Urban Leagueā€™s sixteenth annual Equal Opportunity Day, A Celebration of Diversity and Inclusion, an annual fundraiser that doubles as a showcase for the organizationā€™s programs. Equal Opportunity Day allows previous donors an opportunity to see the impact of their philanthropy and encourages their continued support while also courting new donors. Indianapolis Urban League initiatives and outreach efforts serve more than 10,000 people annually, President and CEO Tony Mason said.

ā€œWe really try to show the returns on their support of the work that we do in the Urban League throughout the year,ā€ Mason said.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with the diversity and inclusion workshop, #MeToo and You! presented by the Indiana Civil Rights Commission. Running concurrently, The Exchange Millennials Forum will focus on ā€œErasing the Racial Wealth Gapā€ with Ian Dunlap.Ā

For those who arenā€™t seeking employment, the health and education forum, ā€œUnraveling a Community Discussion on Mental Health,ā€ featuring Nimaako Brown, National Urban League senior director of community health and wellness, will begin at 1:30 p.m. Ā

Retired Lt. Gen. Russel L. HonorĆ© will be the keynote speaker during the luncheon, which starts at noon. HonorĆ©, the author of three books, is regularly sought after for his expertise in emergency preparedness and crisis management. As commander of Joint Task Force Katrina, he became known as the ā€œCategory 5 Generalā€ for his leadership style. Heā€™s regularly a featured guest on CNN.

Equal Opportunity Day continues to grow and even more so in recent years. Attendance at the luncheon has doubled ā€” almost tripled ā€” since 2014, Mason said.

ā€œWe have worked toward that growth as a team,ā€ Mason said. ā€œWe all roll up our sleeves and play a role in promoting and selling the event.ā€
