Understanding death

And as it appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment Hebrews 9:27 (New King James Version)

It has been said on more than one occasion that in this life, we should live our lives to the fullest. We should eat, drink and be merry because we only pass this way once.

There is nothing particularly wrong with this theory; however it omits a very important point that if the Lord tarries, we will eventually die.

All too often, we focus our attention on living that we fail to understand death. As America mourns over the recent deaths of Michael Jackson and Steve McNair, and others who have passed over from time to eternity, we should be mindful to understand death. You are probably asking as you read this column, ā€œwhy should I understand death?ā€ The Bible contends that when we understand death, we will understand how to live. We will discover that life is only a prelude to death. Consider what the writer of Hebrews said about death in the above verse.

The first attribute of death that we should understand is that death is certain. Death is certain because it is inevitable. The writer points out that we have an appointment with death.

Now, there are some appointments that we can get out of. It is like having that doctorā€™s appointment that we dread to keep because we have not taken heed to the doctorā€™s orders, so instead of listening to the lecture, we simply cancel the appointment.

However, death is a divine appointment without the privilege of cancellation. Because death is inevitable, I cannot deliver myself from it or delay the process. The Psalmist asked the question; ā€œWhat man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his life from the power of the grave?ā€

Another reason why death is certain is because death is impartial. It does not matter to death where one lives, what one drives, how much money one makes or what color one is because we all have to die. The Bible explains to us that we have an appointment with death and because of one manā€™s disobedience, all mankind was made sinners. The punishment for sin is death.

The second attribute of death to consider is that death has choices. We do not get to pick when or how we will die unless one commits the act of suicide (God forbid), but we can choose where we will land after death.

It is important for us to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior in order to inherit eternal life. Eternal life means that when we die, we live again in heaven eternally with Jesus Christ.

There is a flip side however, we can choose not to accept Jesus Christ and experience eternal separation from Him. Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Have you made your choice yet? Tomorrow may be too late!
