Jeanette Harris Pursuing her lifelong passion

More by this author

The opening act of the Circle City Classic Cabaret will feature a smooth jazz band, the Jeanette Harris Band.

Harris was born on March 9, 1979 in Fresno, Calif. She came from a musically inclined family, as her father plays the tuba and her brother is a percussionist. Harris grew up playing the piano. Instead of playing outside with the other kids, she spent most of her time practicing on the piano. In 1994, Harris, her father and her brother formed ā€œThe Harris Family Ragtime Band.ā€ The trio toured different cities in California and performed at various venues.

It wasnā€™t until Harris attended high school that she was introduced to Latin Jazz. It was at this time that her love for the genre began and she started playing the saxophone. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, Harris attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass., where she graduated in 2001 with a bachelorā€™s of music.

After graduating she returned home to Fresno to start a smooth jazz band with her brother, Michael Harris. Starting the band was not an easy feat. Harris was turned down from club to club until she was asked to perform at a cigar shop. After playing as a duo, Harris decided to put together a small stage at a local pizza joint at the mall and perform. She reunited with old friend, Patrick Olvera, who plays the bass to came down to help with the show ā€“ it was a huge success. The band became a trio and performed at local clubs and festivals.

The Jeanette Harris Band has performed at many different venues across the country. Currently 30-years-old, Harris released her first CD, ā€œHere and Thereā€ on the J&M Record label. Since then she has released two more CDs, ā€œJeanette Harris Live at Platinumā€ and her newest, ā€œDown Route 99,ā€ which are on the Sweet Music record label.

Jeanette Harris will also be performing at the Coors Light Friday Nite Classic Cabaret Friday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. in the Indiana Convention Center.
