The Hummingbird

More by this author

A lot of people take nature for granted. Those people fail to realize the things that nature actually offers them. The things we eat, like honey which comes from the Honey Bee. Or the trees which give us life and each breath we take should be cherished for which it might be our last. For me, the beauty of nature is tranquilizing after a long stressful day. While I sit on the porch and watch the many creatures that God has created I become amazed.

While on the porch, I feel the big lemon head in the sky beaming down on me and kissing my chocolate skin. The sky is a pretty blue ocean and the clouds are a fluffy cotton candy at the carnival. A gust of wind begins to blow, and wraps my body like a warm blanket. I close my eyes to savor the refreshing moment because I know this season will not last for too long, for it will be fall soon and then winter. God has made this day absolutely perfect, not too hot with a slight breeze. While Iā€™m lost in a trance, I didnā€™t even notice my slender five foot five cousin, Courtney, walk onto the porch from the house and sit down next to me sipping lemonade. The slam of the security door brought me back to reality, and thatā€™s when something else caught my attention.

I noticed out of the corner of my eye to the left of me was a hummingbird; it was dancing around a pink day lily near the window. I was most fascinated by the way this little creature was flapping its wings. They were moving at about 25-30 mph. The bird had the most beautiful colors; it was a bright purple, green, and white. I then noticed my great aunt, Vivian, sitting in the window. She was a very strong woman, yet calm at the same time. Just like me, she was fascinated with nature. She had bird feeders, beautiful flowers, and two gardens which she took great pride in. It then hit me, this was the same hummingbird that came everyday, and also had been to the house the previous summer. My cousin Courtney then replied, ā€œYou know hummingbirds are her favorite right?ā€ I was still watching the window when she said this. I then decided to go into the house and give her a big kiss.

Now, this is nothing but a memory to my family and me, we will never again see her look out the window while watching her hummingbird. I can only re-enact what she used to do while thinking of her. She passed on November 19, 2009, and although it hasnā€™t quite hit me, I do miss her. I once made a promise to her while she was sick. I told her, ā€œYou will be here to see me do great things.ā€ At the time she looked at me and laughed, but I truly believe she will be the one that helps guide me. The next time I see my aunt, I will be the one looking out the window, and she will be the hummingbird watching over me, making sure Iā€™m doing what Iā€™m suppose to. She will always be loved and never forgotten.
