Broken English comes to Indy

Chicago-based bar and eatery Broken English Taco Pub has brought its eclectic eats to downtown Indianapolis. The pub, on the corner of Georgia and Meridian streets in a space previously occupied by The Tilted Kilt, is within walking distance of Circle Centre Mall and other popular downtown attractions. They serve Mexican street-style tacos and beverages in a trendy environment full of upbeat music and quirky art. The eatery will also be the only downtown pub that will allow guests to order adult beverages “to go” in special Broken English cups.

The name Broken English is a reference to the co-owner’s habit of mixing English and Spanish together in conversation.

“I speak English with my friends, and I often find myself mixing in Spanish words because there are some phrases that simply don’t translate to English. This happens in many other languages and cultures, but that is what makes the name ‘Broken English’ fun — it is part of our daily slang,” explained co-owner Adolfo Garcia.

In a similar fashion, the menu seems to be inspired by various cultures’ dining preferences. Its eight taco options include fried chicken and pork belly tacos, and diners can order a hamburger topped with guacamole, pickled jalapeno and more.

I found myself at Broken English on a Monday night after work. I ordered Al Pastor De Pollo, a taco made of spit-roasted chicken marinated in chili guajillo, with pineapple and cilantro on top. I washed it down with a blueberry daiquiri, one of more than eight frozen drink options served in addition to a full cocktail menu and wide selection of craft beer. While I do wish that the dish came with chips and salsa or a side like at many other taco bars in Indy, the food offered was delicious, and the service was great.

I plan to come back and explore more of the menu on $2 Tuesdays or stop by to catch one of the live performances by local artists. Overall, I think Broken English is a great addition to downtown Indy’s food scene, and I can’t wait to see what more they have to offer.
