Many believe children are full of ingenuity and creativity. Perhaps if their talent was discovered at a young age the child could nourish it and develop their gift. This is where Camp Create comes in.
“There is a lot of artistic talent out there, but it is not being used to glorify God. If we can show kids how to use their gifts for God it can bring about a change,” said Lisa Thomas First Lady of Lord of the Harvest International Church and founder of Camp Create. “It’s important that kids see God in a fun creative way, so they don’t fall into the church and God is boring (routine).”
According to Thomas, this is not your typical summer camp, kids will not only have fun they will also learn. Camp Create was designed to pull out artistic talents that are lying dormant within the youth. The activities include dance, theatre, painting, sports, movie making, poetry and more. Along with learning to enhance their skills the youth will also gain knowledge about God.
Tracy Phillips has signed up her son, Michael, to attend the summer camp and believes the experience will be great, because he is gaining spiritual and physical attributes.
“I like the fact that it’s catered to young people. My son will have fun while learning about God in a way that he can understand it,” explained Phillips. “I wanted a camp that would give him an education and keep his mind sharp over the summer.”
Throughout the summer the children will elevate the talent they are most interested in and at the end of camp they will showcase that gift before their parents at the Variety Show.
“This is not a babysitting place. Of course were going to do fun activities like field trips and swimming. However, we’re going to discover what the kids like to do and that’s the area we’re going to allow them to be creative in. It’s what makes this camp different from others,” Thomas added.
Thomas and her husband Pastor Monib Thomas were inspired to form a school. In preparation for the institution Lisa decided to start a summer camp to see the response they would receive, thus the idea of Camp Create came about.
“Its not a whole lot children can learn in the day care system, here they will actually have a curriculum to go through,” Phillips said. “My son is excited to learn about music and the drums. This (experience) will be awesome for him.”
The camp is $50 a week. With what Thomas is trying to accomplish throughout the course of the summer the price can be a challenge. However family’s economic situation are taken into consideration.
“We understand right now family’s can’t afford that $100 a week for one child let alone (more). We’re trying to make it as economical as we can, but still give them good instruction and top quality service,” Thomas said.
Most schools no longer offer many artistic venues. Camp Create is offering parents an alternative, so their child can find their talent and start to focus on that gift at a young age.
“This camp is needed in this community,” Phillips added. “This will be good for all kids. My son is going to be doing more than watching television this summer.”
